Curriculum Vitae
I am a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute of Economics since 10/2008. Before I worked two years for Oliver Kirchkamp's chair in Empirical and Experimental Economics at the University of Jena.
The two years prior to that I did a post-doc at Imperial College London. I worked as a research associate in two EU-funded projects of the 6th framework programme: TIRAMISU and DANAE.
From 2001 to 2004 I did my PhD at the University of Bristol's Economics department. My thesis is titled "The Economics of Information Goods - A Contract Theory Analysis" and was supervised by Maija Halonen-Akatwijuka.
I spent an ERASMUS exchange semester at Università Ca Foscari in Venice, while I studied economics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München where I graduated as Diplom-Volkswirt in 1999.
Research Interests
My main research interests are:- Behavioural and experimental economics (social preferences, reciprocity, emotions, identity)
- E-commerce (digital media, music industry, e-business models)
Voluntary payments are the focus of my research, especially if they take place in online environments. Do people pay more than they have to? If so, what are the underlying motivations for such behaviour?
I analyse this question with field data sets from online services. Survey data and lab experiments complement this approach in order to get a better understanding about the actual drivers of behaviour.
I am also interested in the implications these theoretical findings may have on online interaction. What are the effects on online industries such as the music industry or digital media in more general terms? And as online interaction becomes increasingly "social" or personal – by way of innovative communication technologies – what does that mean for our online payment behaviour?
